Chicopee, Mass - October 6, 2013 - The Springfield College men's soccer team won its fifth-straight game of the season on Sunday led by Danny Amato (Newington, Conn.) with two assists. The Pride shut out host Elms College, 3-0.
The Pride improve to 9-2-0 on the season while Elms drops to 4-7-0. In the last five games, Springfield has outscored its opponents 17-1, posting four shutouts in that span.
After playing 36 minutes of scoreless soccer, Springfield broke through when Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) fired a shot that found its way into the net to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. Amato delivered a long pass from the right wing to set up the scoring chance. Sommer is tied for a team-high seven goals on the season.
Leading 1-0 at intermission, Springfield added to its tally eight minutes into the second half when Amato and Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) executed a give-and-go following a short corner kick service and Malone deposited the ball into the back of the net to set the score at 2-0. Malone also has seven goals on the season.
The Pride struck again with a set piece at the 78:28 mark on when Tyler Allen (Southbridge, Mass.) lifted his corner kick to Drew Vanasse (Concord, Mass.) who finished with Springfield’s third and final tally.
Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) made six saves including four in the first period to keep a clean sheet for the Pride. Nick Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) made six saves for Elms.
Springfield travels to Framingham State on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game. Elms returns to non-league action on Wednesday at Suffolk University at 8:30 p.m.
