Men's Track & Field Tops Westfield State, WPI and Rhode Island College in First Indoor Meet

Springfield, Mass. - December 7, 2013 - The Springfield College men’s track and field team won its first indoor meet of the season on Saturday. The Pride scored 176 points as a team to top second place Westfield State (135 points), third place WPI (131 points), and fourth place Rhode Island College (94 points).

The Pride was led by Ryan O’Connell (Middleboro, Mass.) and freshman Alex Niemiec (Chicopee, Mass.), both double-event winners for Springfield. O'Connell took first in the mile (4:25.49) and the 1,000 meter run (2:41.81). Niemiec, in his first ever collegiate track & field, meet won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.02 and the long jump, posting a distance of 22-feet, 8-inches, more than a foot better than the nearest competitor.

In the weight throw, senior John Dayton (Bolton, Conn.) finished first with a toss of 58-feet, 4.5-inches while sophomore Brandon Hammerstrom (Auburn, N.H.) took first in the shot put. The sophomore's throw of 45-feet, 10.5-inches was two feet better than the second place finisher.

Other first place finishers included Andrew Aronne (Wethersfield, Conn.) who won the pole vault with a height of 13-feet, 1.5-inches. The 4x200 relay team of Jacob Buhelt (Falmouth, Maine), Ryan Gower (Barrington, R.I.), Derek Jackson (Warwick, R.I.), and Ken Toal (Newtown, Conn.) posted a winning time of 1:32.39. Individually, Jackson earned a second place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.58.

Springfield will be back in action on January 18, traveling to Bowdoin College.
