Springfield Men Finish Third in Its Own 5-Way Indoor Track Meet

Springfield, Mass. -- December 1, 2012 -- The Springfield College men's indoor track & field team placed third in its own 5-Way Meet at the Springfield College Field House this afternoon. The Pride finished with 128 points, behind WPI's total of 159 and Rhode island College's 130, and ahead of Westfield State's 101.50 and Utica's 54.50.

It was the indoor opener for SC in its 2012-2013 season.

On the men's side of this meet, Springfield placed first in three events. In the 5000-meter run, senior Anthony Salvucci (Burlington, Mass.) took first with a time of 15:28.99. Right behind him was junior Erich Voelker (Albany, N.Y.) with a run of 15:51.05.

Also capturing firsts for the host team were sophomore Mason Durant (Pittsfield, Mass.) in the shot put with a toss of 48-3 1/2, and junior John Dayton (Bolton, Conn.) in the weight throw with a toss of 57-1 1/2.

SC had a number of second-place finishes. Among them were from freshman Jacob Simons (Naugatack, Conn.) in the 600-meter run (1:27.21), senior Matt Scully (Watertown, Conn.) in the 800-meters (2:00.70), senior Ryan O'Connell (Middleboro, Mass.) in the 1000-meters (2:42.26), and freshman Sam Baker (Durham, Conn.) in the high jump (6-2).

Also placing second for SC were a pair of relay runs -- the 4x200 and the 4x800. In the 4x200, a foursome of junior Ryan Gower (Barrington, R.I.), junior Adam Swartout (Richfield Springs, N.Y.), sophomore Ken Toal (Newtown, Conn.), and senior Sean Nunan (Clinton, Conn.) ran a time of 1:36.71, just over a second behind the winning RIC team.

In the 4x800 relay, finishing second for SC was the quartet of senior Steven Gilfeather (Kingston, N.Y.), junior Marcellus Brinkerhoff (Schruboak, N.Y.), Scully, and senior Zach Pietras (Ludlow, Mass.) in a time of 8:28.80.
