Huntingdon, Pa. - February 15, 2013 - Despite a career-best 24 kills from Mike Pelletier, the top-ranked Springfield College men's volleyball team was defeated by rival and sixth-ranked Juniata in a five-set marathon on Friday night. Juniata prevailed 24-26, 25-20, 22-25, 28-26, 24-22.
Springfield, was ranked the top team in Division III this week in the AVCA national poll, drops to 6-3 on the season, as this is the Pride's first loss to a Division III team this season. This also marks the first time that Springfield has lost to a Division III team since the Eagles handed Springfield its lone Division III loss last year on February 24, 2012.
Pelletier hit .360 from the outside and added six digs and three blocks. Greg Falcone tallied 16 kills at a .464 clip to go along with four blocks, while both Jimmy O'Leary and Alistair Matthews notched 13 kills each. Mike Becker tied his career-high with 64 assists as Springfield hit .313 on the night and Luis Vega recorded a career-best 17 digs.
Alex McColgin recorded a match and career-high 27 kills with only four errors while picking up a career-best 11 digs, hitting .489 and accounted for a match-best 29.5 points. Rob Strauss finished with a career-high 55 assists and a team and career-high 12 digs. Joe Bortak earned a career-best eight blocks.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Pride held a 10-7 lead after a John Coen kill, but the hosts rally to take a 12-11 lead. Springfield eventually fought off five match points, and had one of their own at 20-19, only to have a service error. Pelletier evened things for the last time at 22, only to have Alex McColgin hammer his 27th kill of the night and Joe Bortak and Paul Kuhn combine for the clinching block.
The Pride will regroup and take on New Paltz at 11:00 am on Saturday and Medaille later in the afternoon.
