



Phoenix, Ariz. -- March 16, 2012 -- The Springfield College baseball team suffered only its second loss of the season this afternoon, falling to Johns Hopkins, 12-1, at the Russ Matt Invitational in Arizona.The Blue Jays are now 3-4-2 on the season with the win, while Springfield falls to 5-2.
Johns Hopkins jumped out to leads of 3-0 afer one inning, and 9-0 after two. The Blue Jays added single runs in the fourth, the sixth, and the seventh.
Springfield scored its lone run in the ninth. In that frame, sophomore infielder Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) led off by reaching second on an error. Junior infielder Tom Burke (Billerica, Mass.) then doubled down the right-field line to plate Hopkins.
Senior righthander Greg Marakovits (Rocky Hill, Conn.) took the loss for the Pride. He pitched three innings, allowing six hits and nine runs, eight earned, while striking out one and walking four. Freshman righthander Mike DeMille (East Milton, Mass.) pitched the next three innings, and senior Daniel Jones (Mechanicville, N.Y.) hurled the final two.
Freshman outfielder Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) had two hits for SC, which had a total of seven on the day. Sophomore catcher Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) went 1-for-3.
Springfield will play one final game in Phoenix tomorrow (Mar. 17) against Concordia.
