Connecticut College Rallies Past Men's Basketball, 70-66

Pat Crean Box Score

New London, Conn. - December 15, 2009 - Pat Crean tallied 20 points, eight rebounds, and six assists but the Connecticut College men's basketball team rallied to a 70-66 win over visiting Springfield College on Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest.

The Pride, which has dropped four straight games, heads into the winter break with a 2-8 record.

Shavar Bernier tallied 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the Camels to the four-point victory. Bernier patiently worked his way through the Springfield defense, finishing with five assists and converting on 5-of-10 shots from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Demetrius Porter finished with 21 points and seven boards and was 6-for-11 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 at the charity stripe. Rob Harrigan added 10 points and five rebounds for the Camels, who have won three out of their last four games.

Crean totaled a team-high 20 points for the visitors and was a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line. Junior guard Darvis Rankins was 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-4 from long distance en route to a career-best 12 points off the Springfield bench. Matt Cavalieri contributed 10 points for the Pride.

Trailing 35-31 at the intermission, the Camels opened the second stanza with a furious 10-to-0 run to take hold of a 41-35 advantage after Chris Kehoe knocked down a jumper with 16:45 to go. The Pride responded though and regained a five-point 50-45 edge on a Cavalieri field goal with 8:24 remaining.

Later on with 3:13 remaining, Porter hit Bernier on a nifty back-door cut for a deuce that put the Camels on top for good at 58-57. Porter scored the next four points, two from the field and two more at the line to close out a 6-to-0 run that extended the advantage to 62-57 with 1:41 left.

In the closing moments with 26 seconds remaining, Crean made it a 66-64 game with a field goal for the visitors. Springfield got the ball back and had a chance to tie the game. But Bernier was able to come away with a defensive board with 11 seconds left and pushed it back to a two possession game with a pair of free throws.

Springfield returns to action on January 2nd when it plays host to Salve Regina at 7:30 pm in the Hampton Inn/Naismith Classic.
