West Point, N.Y. - January 17, 2014 - The Springfield College men's gymnastics team opened up the 2014 campaign against some of the top competition on the East Coast and finished sixth at the West Point Open after totaling 391.7 points.
Penn State took the overall team title with a final score of 428.1, outdistancing William & Mary's second-place score of 416.7. Host Army placed third (413.05), followed by Navy (401.20), Temple (398.65), and Springfield.
Jon Zirna (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a tremendous opening meet for the Pride as he took fifth in the all-around with a score of 79.800. On the floor, Zirna led the Pride with a 13.950, while the sophomore also had Springfield's top score on the parallel bars with another 13.950.
Tucker McClure's (San Jose, Calif.) 13.700 was Springfield's highest mark on the pommel horse, and Ryan Ponce (Tolland, Conn.) had a strong season-opening performance in the still rings, posting a mark of 14.900.
Both McClure and Andy Grabowski (Victor, N.Y.) recorded 13.300's on the vault, and the Derek Taranto (Westborough, Mass.) notched a 12.950 on the high bar for Springfield.
A trio of Springfield individuals will compete on Saturday, with Ponce and Pat Hanley (Abington, Mass.) representing the Pride on the rings and Zirna on the parallel bars. The competition will begin at 7:00 pm.
