Men's Swimming and Diving In Third After Opening Day of NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, Mass. - February 25, 2011 - The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team sits in third place after the opening day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships hosted at MIT.

Defending champion MIT won four out of five events during the first day of competition as it tallied 298 points to lead the field. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy ranked second with 268 points, while Springfield College rounded out the top three with 194 points.

Springfield dominated the one-meter diving competition as it placed six of the top eight finishers. In his first NEWMAC Championship, Brooks Farrar was crowned the one-meter champion as he totaled 524.000 points. Two-time reigning NEWMAC Diver of the Year Brian Sobel placed second with a score of 521.45, while Kenny Pancoast took third with a 483.09. Tyler Gunningsmith placed fifth (388.15), Dalton Crantek took seventh (353.68), and Derek Shaver finished eighth (345.00).

Scott Mackstutis had Springfield's top individual finish of the evening in the pool as he took sixth in the 50 free in 21.38 . Jason Scotto swam the 500 free in 4:44.31 to finish in 10th, while Josh Ernst finished 11th in the 200 IM in 1:57.95,

In the opening event of the evening session, Springfield's 200 free relay team of Mackstutis, Nolan Manley, Mike DeMellia, and Ernst swam a time of 1:25.52 as it finished third. In the 400 medley relay, Springfield finished the evening with a sixth-place finish as Travis Morse, Sean Pennington, John MacDonald, and Scotto touched in 3:37.67.
