McGowan Lifts Baseball Past UMass Boston, 4-3

Winter Haven, Fla. - March 19, 2013 - Mike McGowan's bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Springfield College baseball team to a thrilling 4-3 victory over UMass Boston on Tuesday afternoon.

With the victory, Springfield evens its record on the year to 2-2, while the Beacons drop to 1-5.

Springfield managed eight hits on the day, with McGowan, Sean Smith, and Kyle DiFranco each producing a pair. Starter Travis Lane hurled six innings of scoreless ball, giving up just four hits while striking out two and walking a pair. Peter Baranski earned the win in relief, as he tossed the final three innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits to go along with a pair of K's.

With the score even at three in the ninth, Jamie Dougherty reached on a error to leadoff the inning and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. With two outs, both DiFranco and Frank Calabrese drew walks to load the bases. McGowan then produced with the game on the line, cracking the game-winning single.

Lane powered through the first six innings of the game for Springfield, leading to the bottom of the sixth when the Pride broke open the scoreless contest with three runs. After Calabrese and McGowan registered one-out singles, Smith roped a double down the left field line to score Calabrese. Both Smith and McGowan would then cross the plate after Matt Milano was able to reach on a Beacon error in the infield.

UMB scratched out their first run of the game in the top of the eighth. With one out, Matt Consiglio was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Jamill Moquette. Following a double steal, Consiglio scored on a groundout to short by Charles LaPaglia.

Things got interesting in the top of the ninth as the Beacons rallied to tie the game with a pair of runs. With runners on first and second, Gerald Florentino poked a two-out double to even the contest, setting the scene for Springfield's final inning heroics.

The Pride will play again on Wednesday afternoon when it battles UMass Dartmouth. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
