Claremont, Calif. -- May 26, 2012 -- Colleen Brague and Kelly Curtis of Springfield College competed in the javelin to finish up the Pride's involvement at rhe NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges today in southern California. Brague placed 10th, Curtis 17th -- thus completing SC women's track & field for the season.A total of three Springfield College student-athletes -- two women and one man -- competed on the final day of the NCAA's.
On the women's side, Brague, a junior from Smithfield, R.I., and Curtis, a senior from Princeton, N.J., had to wait to Saturday, the third day of three at the NCAA's, to compete in the javelin. Brague's toss of 137-feet, 5-inches was a season-best. She had entered the NCAA's with the 22nd-best qualifying mark of 22 competitors, but managed to finish 10th of that group. She missed an eighth-place finish by one foot. The top eight finishers become All-Americans.
Meanwhile, Curtis finished 17th with a toss of 130-feet, 8-inches in the same event. Curtis had finished fifth in the heptathlon in two grueling days of competition in that event the two previous days. Curtis did become an All-American in the heptathlon, scoring four team points.
Springfield scored those four points to place in a tie for 55th of 80 scoring teams at the NCAA's.
On the men's side, SC grad student Brian Fuller (Ludlow, Mass.) finished third in the 3000-meter steeplechase on the last day of competition at the NCAA's.
Jim Pennington enters his 29th season as head coach of the Springfield College women’s cross country and track and field teams in 2012-2013.
