Springfield, Mass. - October 27, 2012 - In its season-opener, the Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team took to the pool to best visiting Holy Cross, 173.5-121.5, on Saturday afternoon in the Art Linkletter Natatorium.
The team of Kelsey Poole, Nicolle Stracqualursi, Kellie Pennington, and Amanda Shaw took the 400 yard medley relay with a time 4:07.77. SC had the top three finishers in the 200 yard freestyle as Ashleigh Monroe, Callie Phillips, and Ashley Phoenix finished with times of 1:58.28, 1:59.00, and 2:05.31, respectively.
Poole also took first in the 100 yard backstroke as she finished with a time of 1:01.78. The Pride had the top two finishers in the 100 yard breaststroke as Stracqualursi and Janella Cuyler finished with times of 1:10.71 and 1:10.90.
Molly Potter bested all swimmers in the 200 yard butterfly as she touched with a time of 2:22.03 for Springfield.
Pennington, the reigning national champion in the 50 freestyle, kept the momentum going for the Pride as she captured the 50 free in 24.04 seconds.
The diving team put out an impressive showing as they had the top three finishers in the one meter diving, as Jennifer Thompson, Paige Rhodes, and Melanie Avdoulos finished in that order. Their scores, in order, were 251.46, 214.19, and 195.89. They put out on equally impressive showing and finished in the same order in the three meter diving with scores of 271.95, 252.15, and 208.72.
Phillips and Poole finished 1-2 in the 100 yard freestyle with 55.11 and 56.29 as finishing times. Monroe dominated the 500 yard freestyle as she finished in 5:17.38, more than 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Holy Cross.
Pennington continued her excellence on the day by capturing the 100 yard butterfly in 1:01.84. The Pride closed out the afternoon with a 1:40.57 in the 200 free relay from the team of Pennington, Phillips, Poole, and Shaw.
She and the women’s team will be back in action next weekend as they take on the Coast Guard and URI in Rhode Island.
