Springfield and Roger Williams Win in Opening Night of Women's Soccer Invitational

Springfield, Mass. - September 6, 2013 - The Springfield College women’s soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Friday in the opening night of the Springfield College Invitational.

Springfield dominated possession throughout the game, but had nothing to show for it with one half in the books. The Pride finally found the back of the net six minutes into the second half, on a goal from Kim Rasmussen (East Berlin, Conn.). The senior took a long feed from Ashley Carresi (Billerica, Mass.) and battled by a defender to put the Pride on the board.

Vicky DiNatale (Weymouth, Mass.) sealed the deal for Springfield with seven minutes left in the game. The All-American defender provided a highlight goal, cracking her full-volley bid off a a Sarah Dalton (Schenectady, N.Y.) corner kick into the back of the net to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Springfield outshot UW-Stout, 24-4 with 12 shots on goal, to the Blue Devils’ one. Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) earned the shutout in goal for Springfield.

Roger Williams 1, Westfield State 0 (2OT):

The Roger Williams women’s soccer team beat Westfield State University, 1-0 Friday in double overtime at the Springfield College Invitational.

The Hawks capitalized early in the second overtime period. Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took the free kick from 30 yards out and Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) dribbled through several defenders. Tetreault sent a shot from five yards out into the left corner of the goal for the game-winner just 1:35 in.

Westfield State’s Sarah Sypek (Westhampton, Mass.) almost ended it in the first overtime on a feed from Ashley Bovat (Westfield, Mass.), but Roger Williams’ goalie Stephanie Jacques (Burlington, Vt.) made a kick save to preserve the scoreless game.

Westfield State’s Jess Habif (Natick, Mass.) had a solid game in goal for the Owls. The senior made the save of the game with 22 seconds left in regulation. Roger Williams’ Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) had a one-on-one opportunity as the clock was winding down, but Habif made the stop to send the game into overtime.

Roger Williams will take on the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Westfield State will play Springfield in the second game of the Springfield College Invitational at 7:15.
