Springfield, Mass. -- October 27, 2012 -- Emily Lewis connected on a penalty stroke 11 minutes into the second half to provide the winning margin in Wellesley College's 2-1 field hockey victory over Springfield College this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference contest at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. Thus, Wellesley will be seeded third, SC fourth in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.
With the win, the Blue finished 11-7 overall, 6-2 in the conference. The Pride, meanwhile, finished 8-9 to finish its regular season, and 5-3 in the NEWMAC.
The score was 1-1 at the half, and remained that way through the early part of the second stanza. Then at 11:02 into the second half, Lewis, a senior forward from Weston, Conn., tallied what proved to be the decisive goal.
Each team had its opportunities to tack on to the score, but neither could take advantage.
Springfield took the early lead as senior midfielder Kayla Sokol (West Brookfield, Mass.) scored the game's first goal just 6:58 from the outset. Sokol was one of four from that class celebrating SC's Senior Day. Her shot was assisted by junior defender MK Murray (Killingworth, Conn.).
But Wellesley tied matters at 26:22 when freshman midfielder Anissa Sridhar (Idlerton, Ontario) knocked in the equalizer following a scramble in front. Sophomore midfielder Meghan Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn.) was credited with the assist.
In today's game, Wellesley junior GK Brit Mscicz (Topsfield, Mass.) had two saves.
SC registered eight shots to Wellesley's two overall.
As a result of today's action throughout the league, Babson, with its 8-0 conference mark, will host the semifinals and final of the NEWMAC Tournament. MIT (7-1), like Babson, will also receive a first-round bye.
Tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday are a pair of first-round games. They include #6-seed Mount Holyoke (2-6) at #3-seed Wellesley (6-2) in one match-up, and #5-seed Clark (4-4) at #4-seed Springfield (5-3). Times are still to be determined.
The #4-5 winner will take on Babson in Babson Park Saturday in one semifinal match.
