Winter Haven, Fla. - March 20, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team beat William Paterson, 7-5 in comeback fashion on Thursday being strong offense from Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.).
Springfield has posted a record of 5-1 on its Spring Break trip in Florida.
On Thursday, first-year Tyler Kelly (Absecon, N.J.) earned the win in relief, the first win of his collegiate career. Sophomore Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) closed the game out on the mound for the Pride to earn the save.
Calabrese paced the Pride offensively, going 4-for-5 from the plate with one run scored and an RBI. Billy Paskowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Springfield trailed 5-1 after six innings, as William Paterson posted four runs in the top of the third. The Pride made it a two-run game in the bottom of the sixth as Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Paskowski. Calabrese drove in Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) in the next at-bat after a pitching change with a single to right center making it a 5-3 game.
The Pride offense exploded for four runs in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Springfield took advantage of miscues by William Paterson, scoring on an error by the left fielder, a throwing error by the pitcher and a walk with the bases loaded. O'Leary drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.).
Springfield will continue play in Florida on Friday, taking on St. Olaf at 9:00 a.m.
