Springfield, Mass. – November 21, 2010 – The Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team defeated Middlebury College in a down-to-the-wire finish today in the Pride’s third meet of the weekend. Springfield put up 153.5 points while Middlebury totaled 146.5.

The Pride saw plenty of winners this afternoon, just one day after getting a lone victory from Josh Ernst at the Wheaton College dual meet. Jason Scotto got early points for Springfield, winning the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:34.82. Ernst won his second and third events of the weekend, taking the 100 yard backstroke for the second consecutive day and adding a win in the 50 yard backstroke to his resume. In the 100 back, Ernst posted a time of 0:55.74, while in the 50 back, he clocked in at 0:25.76.

Nolan Manley rebounded from a second place finish on Saturday to post victory in the 100 yard free on Sunday, finishing with a time of 0:49.08. Tony Lamberston added to the Springfield freestyle attack with a win in the 500 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 4:59.53. In the 50 yard butterfly, the Pride’s Scott Mackstutis powered his way to a victory in 0:24.48.

The most exciting event of the meet also decided the winner of the day's competition. Springfield was up by two points heading into the final event of the meet in what would be a winner-take-all scenario. Despite trailing by a full length heading into the final leg of the 200 yard freestyle relay, Manley jetted past his competitors to secure the event win and the meet win for Springfield.

In diving, Brian Sobel swept both the one meter and three meter competitions with national qualifying scores. Sobel took the one meter event with a score of 334.95 and the three meter event with a score of 328.28. Sobel's score in the one-meter was over 100 points higher than the second-place finisher as he re-established his school record on the one-meter board.

The Pride head next to Ewing, New Jersey on Friday, December 3 for a three day Invitational at The College of New Jersey.
