



Providence, R.I. - September 9, 2011 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team breezed to a three-game sweep over local-rival Amherst College in the opening match of the Johnson and Wales Invitational on Friday evening. Set scores were 25-14, 25-21, 25-17.Leading the way for Springfield in a victory was Tessa Smolinski, who tallied a team-best 16 kills. Senior Lauren Torvi pounded out 14 kills, while freshman Molly Giannattasio handed out 27 assists. Both Itza Nieves and Meaghan Hart registered 12 digs for the Pride.
Springfield will take on Connecticut College, Johnson and Wales, and Bridgewater State on Saturday.

Moira Long will enter her third season as head women's volleyball coach in the fall of 2013. Long wasted little time putting her stamp on the program, taking the Pride to the NCAA Championship Elite Eight in 2011.
