Ithaca, N.Y. -- November 2-3, 2012 -- The Springfield College wrestling team, recently ranked 22nd in the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, placed third overall of nine teams in its season-opener at the Ithaca Invitational in the past two days. Four Springfield wrestlers finished second among individuals.
Johnson & Wales placed first with 181 points among the nine teams taking part in the competition. Host Ithaca took second with 172 points, followed by Springfield with 142 points.
Thiel was fourth with 109, followed by Oswego (98.5), Niagara CC (97.5), Baldwin-Wallace (89), Norwich (53.5), and Alfred State (4).
Four wrestlers from Springfield College captured second-place finishes. They included junior Tom Casper (Bergenfield, N.J.) in the 125-pound class, sophomore Derek Adams (Charlestown, R.I.) in the 133-pound class, sophomore Dylan Foley (Southborough, Mass.) in the 149-pound class, and grad student Joe Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn.) in the heavyweight classification.
Sophomore Mark Gonzalez (Tolland, Conn.) placed fourth in the 157-pound class. Junior Victor Ekpenyong (Middletown, Conn.) placed fifth at 133. And senior Derrick Longo (Ardsley, N.Y.) also took a fifth in the 165-pound class.
Two others placed sixth. They were sophomore Brandon Schultie (Georgetown, Del.) at 133, and senior Joe Grippi (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) at 141.
Springfield is now off until it hosts the Doug Parker Invitational at home in the Springfield College Field House on Saturday, November 17.
