Springfield, Mass. - October 1, 2013 - The Springfield College men's soccer team scored two first half goals to earn a 2-1 win over regionally ranked Western New England University at home on Tuesday.
The Pride have taken two out of the last three games over the Golden Bears.
The Pride got an early goal from Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) and never relinquished the lead. Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) got things started for Springfield, heading a ball at the WNE goalie, who punched it straight up in the air. Malone won the battle, heading it in for a quick 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
In the 30th minute, Springfield struck again, this time on a goal by Danny Amato (Newington, Conn.). Senior Michael Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) earned the assist, sending in a low cross pass to Amato on the far post. Amato tapped it in on the right side for a 2-0 Pride lead.
Western New England got on the board with just 4:35 left in the first half. Ryan Williams (Brewster, N.Y.) sent a free kick to the back post where Tim Murray (Lebanon, Conn.) headed it into the back of the net to make it a one goal game.
The Springfield defense, which has allowed just five goals in nine games, had a solid second half to hold on for the 2-1 win. The Pride outshot the Golden Bears, 13-10.
Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) had three saves in goal for the Pride, his biggest coming with seven minutes left in the game. The Golden Bears threatened, nearly tying the game up on a shot by Kevin Parma (Peconic, N.Y.), but Schmid made an incredible diving save to preserve the one goal lead and earn the win. Western New England's Domenick Villano (Bronxville, N.Y.) tallied three saves.
Springfield (7-2) will host NEWMAC rival, Clark at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday while Western New England (7-3-1) will travel to Endicott for a 7:00 p.m.
