Springfield, Mass. -- April 21, 2012 -- The Springfield College men's tennis match swept the doubles and went on to defeat Babson, 7-2 in an important New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match this afternoon at SC's Appleton Courts. The win gave the Pride a berth in the NEWMAC post-season tournament which will be played at MIT next Saturday. Springfield swept the doubles competition to kick off the match, receiving a big win at No. 1 doubles from Ben Burnap and Kyle Mersereau, as the duo grinded out an 8-6 victory.
In singles play, the Pride won four of six matches. Burnap cruised at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3, while Joe Gianelli also won in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-0. Jesse Boyd was victorious at No. 5, 7-5, 6-4, and Doug Nickerson provided Springfield with its only three-set victory of the afternoon. Nickerson prevailed at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 7-6, 10-8,

Toby Coffin G’01, enters his second year as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Springfield College. Coffin, who has coached at numerous high schools in the area, will look to build a program which will contend for a conference crown.
