Men's Soccer Blanks Western Connecticut, 3-0, In Non-Conference Finale

Tyler Fletcher Box Score

Danbury, Conn. - October 23, 2012 - The Springfield College men's soccer team netted a pair of first-half goals and added an insurance goal in the second half to claim a 3-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.

The win bumped the Pride's record to 6-9-2, while the loss, drops Western’s season record stands to 3-11-2.

Neither team managed to generate a serious scoring opportunity until the midway point of the first half.  At the 23:35 mark, Springfield’s Alex Reilly took a pass from Drew Vanasse and rocketed a low shot toward the Western goal.  As the ball skimmed quickly across the turf, it deflected off the foot of a Western defender and into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 Springfield lead.

With just over five minutes remaining in the first half, Springfield capitalized on a ball that was misplayed by the Western defense to take a 2-0 lead.  As Western was attempting to clear the ball from in front of its goal, an awkward kick resulted in the ball being intercepted by Springfield’s Scott Saucier.  Saucier delivered the ball to Tyler Fletcher who quickly re-directed it to Danny Amato , and Amato finished the play by chipping a shot just out of the reach of the Western keeper.  The score remained 2-0 at the half.

With under 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Springfield’s Drew Sommer put the game out of reach when he pounced on the rebound of a shot taken by Saucier and delivered the ball to the back of the net, giving the Pride a 3-0 final margin of victory.

For the game, Springfield held a 16-7 advantage in shots, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.  Sophomore keeper Kosmas Tsetsos finished with five saves for Western, while a pair of Springfield keepers, Billy Schmid and Chris Walton, combined for three saves.

Springfield will look to better its conference playoff seeding as it hosts WPI on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
