Women's Indoor Track and Field Wins 2009 ECAC Championships

Medford, Mass. - March 7, 2009 - The Springfield College women's indoor track and field team won the 2009 ECAC Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at Tufts University. Springfield finished 1st out of 51 teams with 62 points in the competition.

Springfield drastically improved from last season, as in last year's ECAC Championships, the Pride finished 27th out of 56 teams.

SC took the top two spots in the 200 meter dash as Nikki Hay finished first with a time of 25.37, closely followed by teammate Erika Marks, who crossed the finish line in 25.49. Hay also finished in eighth-place in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.33. Hay's best time in the 55 meters this season is 7.22, which ranks her 13th in the nation in Division III.

In the 500 meter race, Lacey Cartier took fifth in 1:19.13, while SC's 4x800 relay of Michelle Mirti, Emma Lang, Jackie Pires, and Amanda DiPaolo crossed the finish line in sixth in 9:48.01.

Hay finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 39-feet, 3 1/2 inches. That's currently first in the nation in Division III. Hay took second in the long jump with a mark of 17-09.50, while Fatima Rose took fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 54-04.75. With her distance in the weight throw, Rose set a new Springfield College record and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Rose is now ranked 10th in the nation in Division III in the weight throw.

Those who finished in the top eight picked up All-ECAC honors for their efforts in their respective events.
