Springfield, Mass. - October 13, 2010 - The Williams College men's soccer team had a late first-half goal hold up as it defeated Springfield College, 1-0, in a non-conference battle on Wednesday evening at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. Williams, who entered the match ranked third in the nation, improves to 8-0-2 on the season while the Pride fall to 9-4-1.
With time winding down in the first half, the Ephs were awarded their fifth corner kick of the opening 45 minutes. Gaston Kelly fired the corner into the box, which teammate Joe Vella brilliantly headed into the back of the net to score what would prove to be the game-winning goal. The goal came with just 25 seconds left on the clock.
Springfield had a promising chance in the waning moments, but Jae Tracey's attempt from 25 yards out sailed wide of the goal.
Chris Walton shouldered the loss as he made three saves in the match. Peter Morrell needed to make just one save to earn the shutout victory.
The Ephs held an 11-3 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.
The Pride is next in action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Babson for a critical league match. Kick off is slated for 2:00 pm
