Middlebury, Vt. -- April 3, 2010 -- The Springfield College outdoor men’s track and field team picked up three wins last Saturday on a beautiful day at the Dragone Track & Field Complex at Middlebury College. The Pride finished with 161 points, outlasting Bowdoin which finished in second with 119 points, followed by Middlebury with 99 points and Vermont with 14 points.Zach Pietras started off the Pride’s success as he won the 3000-meter steeplechase in 10:05.30. The Pride won the 4x100 meter relay with a foursome consisting of Matt Amendola, Nickel Hay, Garrett Sharnick, and Steve Headley.
Along with this win, Headley also had a first place finish in the 100-meter dash (10.87 seconds) and 200-meter dash (22.27 seconds). Amendola added a second place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.69) and a second in the 100-meter dash (11.39). Sharnick also placed in the 100-meter dash as he finished in third (11.74).
Hay was also a multiple winner on the day. He also won the 400-meter dash (48.75), took second in the long jump (21-02.00), and was a part of the 4x400 meter relay team (3:20.21). Also on this relay team was Kevin Behlmer, Kevin Coyle, and Christopher Quetant.
Along with the relay victory, Coyle finished first in the long jump (22-00.25) and third in the 110-meter hurdles (16.81). Quetant also finished second in the 400-meter dash (49.51).
Troy French and Stephen Creamer finished first and third, respectively, in the 1500-meter run. French won the event with a time of 4:04.90 and Creamer came in third running it in a time of 4:06.58. In the 5000-meter run, Anthony Salvucci finished in third with a time of 15:58.24.
Nick Hogan also had a good day in the field as he finished third in the hammer throw (135-00), first in the shot put (44-04.25), and third in the discus throw (128-10). Also in the shot put, was second place finisher Jonathon Nardi (40-01.50). In the long jump, Dylan Brock finished third (21-00.50) to go along with his third place finish in the triple jump (40-00.00). Emil Occhiboi won the high jump for the Pride as he jumped a height of 6-01.25. Also in the high jump for the Pride was third place finisher Kevin Ross (5-09.25). Ryan Ux also took home a third place as he participated in the javelin throw and threw a distance of 164-09.
Next Saturday, Springfield will travel to Coast Guard for its annual three-way meet with the Bears and with WPI.
Ken Klatka, just inducted into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame in October, 2011, enters his 37th season as head coach of the men’s track and field program in 2012-2013. He ranks among the nation’s most successful coaches, with an overall record of 442 wins, 144 losses, and two ties for an impressive .753 winning percentage. Under his direction, Kevin Coyle '12 won the 2011 Division III Indoor Long Jump National Championship.
