Softball Sweeps Conference Doubleheader With Smith

Springfield, Mass. - April 4, 2014 - The Springfield College softball team picked up two big New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) wins on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against Smith College on Potter Field.

The Pride won the first game, 4-3 then took the second game by a score of 4-1 in six innings. The second game was called after six innings due to darkness. Springfield improves to 9-4-1 (2-1 NEWMAC) with the pair of wins, while Smith drops to 9-6 (3-5 NEWMAC) with the losses.

Springfield 4, Smith 3:

Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.) had another big day at the plate to lead the Pride, going 3-for-3 with one run scored and three RBIs. Christina Leader (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored twice, collecting one hit, while Jenna Webb (Harrison, N.Y.) drove in the game-winner on double through the left side in the sixth inning.

Smith got on the board first with one run in the third. Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y.) reached on an error and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash.) and to third on a single from Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J.). Tori Brown (New Market, Md.) picked up an RBI, grounding out to second to score Giordano. Springfield got out of the inning on a fly ball to center field.

Springfield tied it up in the bottom half of the inning, doing it all with two outs. Leader got things going with a single to left field. Ally Rivelli (North Kingstown, R.I.) gave the Pride two base runners with a single to right and Nelson put Springfield on the board with a double through the left side, scoring Leader for a 1-1 game.

Smith put up two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn.) got on with a bunt then stole second to move into scoring position. Kushner advanced to third on a ground ball out then scored on a deep double at the fence in left field from Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass.) for a 2- 1 lead. Burchat scored on an error for the Pioneers' third run.

Springfield took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, as Camdyn Morgillo (West Haven, Conn.) and Leader both reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt by Rivelli moved the runners and Nelson delivered the game-tying triple, scoring Morgillo and Leader. Webb rocketed a double through the left side to score Nelson and the Pride took a 4-3 lead.

With one out in the sixth, Tasha Polana (Orange, Mass.) hit a deep double off the fence in right center, then advanced to third on a grounder to shortstop , but Smith got out of the inning on a grounder to first base.

Ashley Marino (Harrison, N.Y.) retired the side in order in the seventh to earn her third win of the season (3-2). Marino finished the day allowing two earned runs and six hits while striking out three.

Zimmerman had a big day from the plate for Smith, going 3-for-4, while Burchat also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3.

Springfield 4, Smith 1 (6 inn.):

Jen Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) got the win in the circle for the Pride, improving to 4-2 on the year. She allowed just five hits over six innings while striking out four. First-year Nicole Cring (Cooperstown, N.Y.) got the save, pitching one hitless inning of relief in her second career-appearance.

Leader went 2-for-3 from the plate to lead Springfield. The Pride had four other players notch a hit in the win.

Smith threatened in the top of the third, but Springfield got out of a bases loaded jam as Joseph forced an easy pop up to Alyssa Dumphy (Southington, Conn.) at third base to get out of the inning unscathed.

In the bottom half of the inning, with one out and runners on first and second, Rivelli dropped down a perfect bunt in front of the plate and beat it out to load the bases. After the Smith third baseman got an out at the plate in the next at bat, Webb delivered a two-run double to left center to take a 2-0 lead. In the next at bat, Brielle Engelbrecht (Granby, Mass.) hit a base-clearing double to deep left field to put the Pride up 4-0.

Smith posted one run in the top of the fifth as Blokker reached on an error then advanced to third on two-straight passed balls. She scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 game.

Smith had five different players produce a hit in the loss.
