Terre Haute, Ind. - March 14, 2009 - Nikki Hay was named an All-American after she finished fifth in the triple jump in the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The 2009 New England Women's Field Athlete of the Year finished in fifth place with a distance of 38-11, or 11.86 meters. The event winner proved to be Akeye Aimable of Wartburg College, who jumped a distance of 39-6 (12.04m). In the prelims, Hay was the ninth qualifier for the finals with a distance of 37-9 1/2 (11.52m).
Hay entered the event with the top distance to date in Division III, a mark of 11.97 meters or 39-3 1/4, that she reached on March 7 at the ECAC Division III Championships.
Hay rebounded from last year's competition in which she did not make the finals of the event. The Norwalk, Conn. native also earned All-America status last May when she finished third in the triple jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
As a team, thanks to Hay's four points, Springfield finished in a tie for 39th. Wartburg won the national title with 51 points.
