Complete Women's ResultsSpringfield, Mass. - December 11, 2008 - Led by juniors Steve Headley and Nikki Hay, the Springfield College men's and women's track and field teams defeated Westfield State tonight in the school's second-ever indoor meet in its new Field House. It was the first scoring meet, however, as the SC men won by a score of 125-60, while the SC women won by a count of 117-71. (Please see the men's track and field home page for the men's story.)
On the women's side, Hay, who hails from Norwalk, Conn., remains the headliner. She won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.08 seconds, the long jump with a season-best leap of 18 feet, 1 inch, and the triple jump at 37 feet, 6 1/2 inches. She also helped Springfield win the 4x200 meter relay (1:48.20). "In the long jump, Nikki has never jumped this far this early," said Springfield College Head Coach Jim Pennington.
Another who had "a great day" (Pennington) was freshman Erica Marks (East Lyme, Conn.), who won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.58 seconds, finished second to Hay in the 200 meters (26.69), and ran the third leg of the winning 4x200 meter relay,
The Pride had several events in which it finished 1-2-3 or 1-2-3-4. In the 400-meter dash, SC was led by sophomore Janite Cadet (Providence, R.I.) at 1:03.58. She was followed by junior Nicole Reynolds (Riverside, R.I.) at 1:04.62, and by senior Katie Parente (Torrington, Conn.) at 1:04.91.
In the 800, Springfield sophomore Lacey Cartier (York, Me.) placed first with a time of 2:24.13. She was followed by sophomore Emma Lang (Woodstock, N.Y.) (2:33.63), and by sophomore Jackie Pires (Davie, Fla.) (2:34.62).
In the pole vault, three SC teammates all jumped 8-feet even to finish 1-2-3. Freshman Nicolle Loura (Windsor, Conn.) (see photo above) wound up winning on fewer misses. Behind her were the duo of sophomore Mia Salmeri (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Kathryn Schumann (Cromwell, Conn.).
In the triple jump, already mentioned was winner Nikki Hay. Finishing second with ber best jump was junior Kayla Robertson (Wakefield, R.I.) at 32-11 1/4, and sophomore Caitlin Breault (Feeding Hills, Mass.) at 31-8.
In the shot put, freshman Fatima Rose (Dover, N.H.) won with ease with a toss of 37-10. Finishing second was freshman Kelli McMillan (Burlington, Mass.) at 35-1 3/4, and placing third was sophomore Katherine Ward (Winslow, Me.) at 34-9 3/4.
Other winners for Springfield included sophomore Allison Dalton (Schenectady, N.Y.) in the 600 (1:50.50), senior Kelsey Bishop (Warwick, R.I.) in the weight throw (45-7 1/4), and the 4x400 and the 4x800 relays,
Springfield is now off until Saturday, Jan. 24 when it hosts its third and final indoor track and field meet (five teams total). Coming to the Springfield College Field House will be Coast Guard, Eastern Connecticut, UMass Dartmouth, and Westfield State.
Jim Pennington enters his 29th season as head coach of the Springfield College women’s cross country and track and field teams in 2012-2013. Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
