Women's Track & Field Places Sixth At New Englands

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., May 3, 2003 - Springfield College senior
Sara Mitchitson (Haverhill, Mass.) finished second in the javelin throw to lead the Pride to an impressive sixth-place finish at the 2003 Division III New England Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Tony Plansky Track on the Williams College campus.
The Pride, which was tied for sixth with Middlebury, finished with a total of 36 points. Williams took home the team title with 189 points.
SC junior All-American
Marisa Clapp (Charlton, Mass.) finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run (4:37.71) and eighth in the 800 meters (2:20.27). Classmate
Leyla Williams (Unionville, N.Y.) earned a third-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 49.89 meters.
Freshman
Meg Young (Hurley, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 3000-meter steeplecase (11:57.78) while classmate
Alisha Miner (Sanbornton, N.H.) sprinted to a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:00.79). Junior
Katie Olsen (Windham, Maine) finished 10th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.52).
Sophomores
Sarah Martin (Madison, N.H.), who had a time of 16.90, and
Jamie Bafaro (Mechanicsville, N.Y.) , who posted a time of 16.97, finished in sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles.

Jim Pennington enters his 29th season as head coach of the Springfield College women’s cross country and track and field teams in 2012-2013. Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
