SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 8, 2006 – Springfield College junior forward Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) scored three goals and assisted on two other scores as the Pride defeated New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe, Wheaton College, 13-8, this afternoon at Benedum Field.
In a battle of two 2-0 NEWMAC squads, SC came out on top, as the Pride improves to 5-4 overall on the season with a 3-0 conference mark, and Wheaton College falls to 4-4 overall on the 2006 campaign and 2-1 in league play.
Fresh off her career-high six-goal performance at Williams College on Wednesday afternoon (April 5), junior midfielder Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.) added three scores in the victory over the Lyons this afternoon to go along with an assist. For the season, Lampros has scored a team-best 23 times.
With the score tied at one apiece in the early going, SC mounted a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 advantage with 8:54 left in the opening half. The Pride ended the first stanza with a 7-3 lead, as SC out shot the Lyons by a 21-12 margin in the first 30 minutes of action.
After Wheaton cut the lead to 7-5 with two quick goals in the second half, the Pride scored six consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. Junior midfielder Lisa Thomas (Whitman, Mass.) chipped in with two second-half goals and an assist in the game, as senior forward Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) and freshman forward Heather Dobson (Longmeadow, Mass.) also added two scores each.
Wheaton was led by senior co-captain Julia Coit with three goals in the losing effort. The senior forward now has a team-leading 26 scores on the season in just eight games for the Lyons.
SC will next host Smith College on Tuesday evening, April 11th, in a 7:00 p.m. NEWMAC tilt at Benedum Field.
