Men's Swimming Places Second At F&M Invitational

LANCASTER, Pa., Dec. 7, 2003-- The Springfield College women's swimming team turned in an impressive second-place finish in the eight-team field in the Franklin & Marshall Invitational last weekend.
Junior All-American
Megan Skinner (Acton, Mass.) had a huge weekend. She recorded victories in three individual events: 500 freestyle at (5:11.28), 100 backstroke (59.44), and 200 backstroke (2:06.25), and swam legs on three first-place relays. In the 200 backstroke, she beat two-time defending national champion Krystle Satrum of F&M and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. SC sophomore
Sarah Strout (Edgecomb, Maine) placed first in two events, winning the 1,650 freestyle (17:54.15) and 1,000 freestyle (10:51.09).
The Pride also won three relays. Senior
Jessica Defoe (Monson, Mass.), senior
Marybeth Kuliga (Sandford, Maine), Skinner and Strout won the 800 freestyle relay at (7:57.51). The team of Defoe, Skinner, sophomore
Alicia Hart (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore
Emily Phillips (North Windham, Conn.) emerged victorious in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.79). Skinner, Defoe, Hart and senior
Beth Byron (Haverhill, Mass.)also recorded a victory in the 400 medley relay (4:03.64).
The SC men were equally impressive, also placing second out of eight teams.
Junior
Jeff Doornweerd (Meriden, Conn.) won two individual events: the 50 freestyle (21.64) and 100 freestyle (47.57). Junior
Louis Arruda (West Warrick, R.I.) finished first in the 200 free (1:43.02) and 500 free (4:44.37), while sophomore
Dan Moran (Wilbraham, Mass.) won the 200 butterfly (1:54.61) as well as the 1,000 free (9:51.95).
SC also took first place in two relays. Doornweerd, Arruda, junior
Blake Leshnick (Suffern, N.Y.) and freshman
Ryan Mahoney (Westford, Mass.) rolled in the 200 free relay (1:26.42). In the 400 freestyle, the same team (3:12.02) swam to a win.

Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos

Peter Avdoulos is regarded as one of the top diving coaches in the nation, and will enter his 28th season as the diving coach for both the men's and women's programs in 2012-2013. The current NEWMAC Men's Diving Coach of the Year, Avdoulos has coached countless All-New England and All-American divers, as well as several National Champions.
