Alesia Vaccari Voted NEWMAC Player Of The Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., November 9, 2004—Springfield College junior Alesia Vaccari was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year.

Vaccari joined sophomore Leah Hettrick and junior Ashley Reves on the all-conference team, announced today at the postseason conference coaches meeting.

Vaccari, a native of Winsted, Conn., was an honorable mention All-American and a first-team all-conference selection in 2003. The Pride’s co-captain led SC to its second-consecutive NEWMAC championship last week, highlighted by a 57-assist, 10-dig and eight-kill performance in a 3-2 win over Coast Guard in the conference championship match (Nov. 6). On the season, Vaccari averaged 9.6 assists-per-game and 2.4 digs-per-game while hitting .331.

Hettrick, an outstanding defender who hails from Meriden, Conn., was the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in ’03. She established a school record for digs with 4.92 per game this season. Hettrick tallied a team-best 556 digs overall and was named NEWMAC Player of the Week on Sept. 7 after earning most valuable player honors as the Pride won the Springfield College Invitational.

Reves, a resident of Orchard Park, N.Y., joined Vaccari on the honorable mention All-America and all-conference teams last season. Reves led the conference in aces per game (0.92) and ranked fifth in kills per game (3.48). The reigning NEWMAC Player of the Year, she tallied a team-high 393 kills, and became the seventh player in school history to register 1,000 kills on Oct. 9.

The Pride (25-7) returns to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament for the second-consecutive season after winning the conference title. SC faces the winner of Emmanuel-Endicott in the second round on Friday, Nov. 12 at Williams.
