Women's Volleyball Captures Second Place at Johnson & Wales Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I., September 9, 2006 - Springfield College senior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) has been named to the All-Tournament Team at this weekend's Johnson & Wales Invitational as the Pride finished second overall with a two-day record of 3-1.

In the first day of competition (Sept. 8), SC defeated Suffolk University and Bridgewater State College by identical scores of 3-0. In the opening round, the Pride downed Suffolk by scores of 30-24, 30-21, and 30-9. SC then defeated Bridgewater State on Friday evening by margins of 30-15, 30-15, and 30-22.

In today's action, the Pride started off with a 3-1 win against UMass Dartmouth, beating the Corsairs by a score of 30-18, 30-17, 22-30, and 30-16. The win put SC in the championship match against Otterbein College, as the Pride and Cardinals battled it out for the title. Otterbein got the best of SC, unfortunately, in three very close games of 30-26, 30-26, and 30-27.

In being the lone member of SC to garner All-Tournament Team honors this weekend, Hettrick passed former Pride great, Robin Chase '00, for first all-time in career digs at Springfield College. Hettrick, a senior captain on this 2006 squad, came into the weekend with 1,853 career digs, and left with a current career total of 1,938, passing Chase who finished her career with a total of 1,890.

In the four matches this weekend, Hettrick compiled an impressive total of 85 digs, good for a 6.54 dig-per-game average. Hettrick's best match of the weekend came in the win over UMass Dartmouth, in which the libero registered a team-best 26 digs.

Leading the way in attacking for the 7-1 Pride this weekend was senior outside hitter Nicole Curtin (Beacon, N.Y.), who recorded a total of 36 kills (2.77/game) in 13 games played. Curtin also chipped in with a team-high 16 service aces in the four matches.

Senior Kathryn Becker (Albuquerque, N.M.) had a solid weekend for SC with a toal of 34 kills (2.62/game), 51 digs (3.92/game), and 10 servie aces. In the 3-1 win over UMass Dartmouth, Becker had a very impressive match with 21 digs, 12 kills, and an even .300 hitting percentage.

The Pride (7-1) will next begin New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this Tuesday night, September 12th, when it travels to Wellesley College for a 7:00 p.m. start.
