Springfield College Athletics Caps Outstanding Season By Finishing 26th In NACDA Directors’ Cup
ORLANDO, Fla., June 14, 2004 – Springfield College is renowned for having one of Division III’s top athletics programs. This tradition of excellence continued in the 2003-2004 academic year as SC ranked 26th out of the 424 NCAA Division III colleges and universities in the 2003-2004 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors' Cup competition.
SC has finished in the top-35 in the Directors’ Cup seven times since moving to Division III in the 1995-1996 season, including a 13th-place finish in 1999-2000. The prestigious award is presented annually by NACDA to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. Points are awarded for competing in NCAA Tournament play.
“That we have consistently ranked in the top-10 percent of all Division III institutions is a tribute to our student-athletes and our coaching staff,” said Dr. Cathie Schweitzer, director of athletics. “I am always so impressed with their commitment and dedication. They are great ambassadors for Springfield College.”
SC, which totaled 366.5 points in the Directors’ Cup competition, won conference championships in football, men’s lacrosse, women’s volleyball, women’s swimming and diving and wrestling. In NCAA Division III Tournament action, women’s volleyball reached the regional finals, and football and men’s lacrosse competed in their respective national tournaments. Men’s swimming and diving placed 17th at the NCAA Division III Championships, and wrestling was 23rd at its national championships. Men’s and track & field had eight individuals garner All-America honors at the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships.
SC’s 26 varsity teams compiled a 233-164-5 overall won-loss record (58.3 percent) in the 2003-2004 season.
NACDA, which is now in its 39th year, is the professional and educational association for more than 6,100 college athletics directors, associates, assistants and conference commissioners at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada. Through its series of management seminars, clinics and workshops and publication of the bi-monthly magazine Athletics Administration, NACDA offers educational opportunities to its members. More than 1,200 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention. Additionally, the Association operates the NACDA Directors' Cup program, which honors the all-sports champion in each of the NCAA Divisions -- I, II, III -- and the NAIA.
