No. 4 Wrestling Comes Back For 24-21 Victory Over No. 23 Norwich
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Dec. 11, 2004 – Springfield College sophomore All-American
Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.) scored a pin at 141 lbs. to lead the No.4 Pride to a come-from-behind win over No. 23 Norwich, 24-21, this afternoon in Blake Arena in a battle of the top two Division III teams in New England.
Norwich jumped out to a 12-3 lead on consecutive pins by Shaun Vacher (165) and John Capen (174). After a major decision by SC’s
Elliot Smith (Richville, N.Y.) at 184 lbs, and a decision by Norwich’s Silver Oghayore at 197 lbs made the score 15-7 in favor of the Cadets, Pride senior captain
Scott Fay (Danbury, Conn.) registered a technical fall at 285 lbs to cut the lead to three.
Junior
Derek McNerney (Baldwin, N.Y) was credited with a pin at 125 lbs as Norwich lost a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct to stake the Pride to an 18-14 lead that it would not relinquish. After a decision by Norwich’s Jay Ciuricich at 133 lbs, Gaeta’s pin gave the Pride a commanding 24-17 lead.
