SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 3, 2006 - Springfield College senior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week in men’s basketball for the week of January 2nd.
Yvon, a graduate of Cathedral High School, led the Pride to a pair of victories over the winter break leading up to January 2nd. In those two games, one an 83-64 win over Connecticut College on Dec. 14, and the second, an 88-70 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in the opening round of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic hosted by SC on January 1st, the senior guard averaged an even 24.0 points. In those two games, Yvon also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.5 steals, while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor (16-30) and 78.6 percent from the line (11-14).
Thus far on the season, Yvon leads the NEWMAC in points per game with a 22.4 average. The senior co-captain is second in free throw percentage (85.7%) and three-point field goals per game (2.6), as he is also seventh in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (38.2%).
Including the Pride’s January 2nd Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic championship game, a 70-64 loss to Bates, Yvon has scored 242 points in the first 11 games of his senior season, giving him an up-to-date total of 1,746 for his career. That mark is good for fifth all-time on SC’s scoring list, as Yvon needs exactly 258 more points to become the all-time scoring leader at Springfield College. Hassan Robinson (‘95) currently sits atop the list with 2,003 career points.
The Pride has compiled a 3-8 overall record on the young season, playing some tough competition in the early going. SC will next host yet another non-conference opponent in Keene State College on Thursday, January 5, in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
