Men's Basketball Defeats Wheaton, 74-69
NORTON, Mass., Feb. 10, 2004 – Springfield College sophomore guard
Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) erupted for 24 points as the Pride downed Wheaton College, 74-69, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s basketball game tonight in Emerson Gymnasium.
Yvon was 7-12 from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line as SC won its second-straight conference game to improve to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in the conference. The Lyons fell to 13-8 and 4-5 in the NEWMAC.
The Pride opened the game with a 15-5 run and never looked back. The Lyons refused to give in, however, cutting the SC lead to 34-29 at the half.
The Pride, which never trailed in the game, started the second half with a 16-6 run to increase their lead to 50-35. Wheaton managed to battle back, closing to within five points with :41 seconds left in the game. The Lyons were forced to foul Yvon, who is second in the NEWMAC in free-throw percentage, and he sealed the victory for SC by hitting 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore forward
Mike DeCesar (Acton, Mass.) and sophomore guard
Joel Aponte (Windsor, Conn.) helped the cause with 13 and 12 points, respectively, while freshman guard
Anthony Pizzo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had seven points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Wheaton senior forward
Scott Mahan finished with a game-high 25 points while pulling in 10 boards. Junior guard
Josean Vega added 17 points.
SC is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 when it hosts MIT at 1:00 pm in Blake Arena.
