ASHLAND, Va., November 19, 2005 - Springfield College senior forward Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa.) led all scorers with 19 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range and was named the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic Most Valuable Player (MVP) as the No. 12 Pride defeated No. 2 Randolph-Macon College, 74-70, this afternoon in Ashland, Virginia.
In the two-day Tip-Off Classic hosted by Randolph-Macon College, Parvin totaled 35 points and 16 rebounds on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point territory to start the season. Senior Erin Schwartz (Milford, Conn.) added 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals as the center was named to the All-Classic Team.
Junior point guard LaToya Franklin (Latham, N.Y.) and senior forward Katie Trice (Concord, N.H.) each compiled double-doubles in the victory, as both players scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Franklin had a very solid night for SC in just its second game of the season, dishing out a team-high seven assists and adding two steals.
With the game tied at 20 apiece and six minutes left in the first half, the Pride started to pull away, going on a 17-6 run to take a 37-26 edge into the break. In that six-minute key span, Parvin sparked SC with nine points. For the majority of the second half, the Pride maintained a 10-point advantage in the contest, as a Franklin jumper made the score 71-60 in favor of SC with just 1:08 left in the game as the Pride held on for the 74-70 win.
