SPRINGFIELD, Mass., – January 1, 2006 – Jackie Powers scored 19 points and Matia Kostakis added 16 to lead the Bates College women’s basketball team to an 83-51 victory over Springfield College in a first-round game of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic at Springfield’s Blake Arena this afternoon.
With the victory, Bates evened its record at 5-5, while Springfield fell to 5-4. Bates halted a 3-game losing streak, while Springfield has now lost 3 straight. Bates will next play the winner of Trinity (TX)-St. Lawrence in the championship game at 5:30 pm tomorrow. Springfield will play the loser of that game in the consolation game at 1 pm.
Powers, a freshman guard from Andover, Mass. and Andover High School, scored 11 of her 19 in the second half. She was 9-of-14 from the field for the contest. Kostakis, a sophomore forward who also hails from Andover, Mass. and also attended Andover High School, was 7-of-13 from the field. She also added a game-high 10 rebounds.
Other double-figure scorers for the Bobcats included junior center Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass./Phillips Andover) with 12 points (and 8 rebounds and 5 steals), and freshman forward Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) with 10 points. Sophomore guard Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth HS) was credited with a game-high 9 assists.
For Springfield, the only double-figure scorer was senior forward Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa./Montrose Area HS) with 13 points. Three others scored 7 points, including senior center Erin Schwartz (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran HS), sophomore guard Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I./LaSalle Academy), and freshman forward Liz Brosseau (Franklin, Mass./Franklin HS). Junior guard LaToya Franklin (Latham, N.Y./Shaker HS) recorded 7 assists.
Bates outrebounded Springfield, 42-37. The Bobcats forced 28 Springfield turnovers, while committing just 16 of their own.
Bates started off exceptionally well, hitting 12 of its first 18 shots from the floor. The Bobcats led 15-2 after the first 4 minutes, 23-4 after the first 7:08, and 34-6 after the first 11:58 when Barton connected on a 3-pointer.
Springfield came to life by scoring the next 11 points, cutting the margin to 34-17. When SC freshman center Lauren O’Connor (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla HS) made two free throws with 4:38 left in the half, Bates led by 16 (35-19). But that was as close as Springfield would come for the rest of the game. SC’s Parvin hit a jumper as the halftime buzzer sounded, but Bates led at that point, 44-26.
Bates scored the first 8 points of the second half, doubling the score to 52-26 with 17:10 left on a jumper by senior center Annie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton HS). When SC’s Parvin made a lay-up with 9:02 left, the lead was down to 21 at 65-44. But Bates would later lead by as many as 37 (82-45) when sophomore guard Mary Hart (Bradford, Mass./Brooks School) hit a 3-pointer with 3:10 left.
Bates shot .478 from the field for the game (33-of-69), while Springfield shot just .345 (19-of-55).
