Women's Basketball Sails Past WPI, 63-46
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 18, 2005 – Springfield College freshman guard
Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I.) scored a career-high 18 points as the Pride defeated WPI, 63-46, in an New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s basketball tonight in Blake Arena.
McCarthy, who hit 7-of-12 field goal attempts, also had three assists and drilled three 3-pointers. Junior forward
Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa.) scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and junior center
Erin Schwartz (Milford, Conn.) grabbed 14 rebounds, scored 10 points and blocked four shots for the Pride, which improved to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The Engineers, who fall to 7-8 and 2-2 in the NEWMAC, were led by senior center Lee Helberg, who had a team-high 11 points to go along with seven rebounds, and junior Kate Herchenroder, who came off the bench to score eight points.
SC outscored WPI, 36-16 in the paint and held a 43-35 edge on the glass. The Pride also converted 22 Engineer turnovers to 23 points.
With the score tied at 11-11 with 9:33 to play in the first half, SC went on a 16-2 run over the next 6:23 to take a 27-13 lead at 3:10. McCarthy sparked the surge with a three-pointer with 8:54 left, and scored nine of the 16 points in the run.
SC, which led 34-21 at intermission, opened the second half with a 12-2 run and held a 46-23 advantage with 15:35 remaining. It was McCarthy getting the run started with a lay-up at 19:25. McCarthy, Parvin and senior forward
