Women's Basketball Downs Smith, 72-47

NORTHAMPTON, Mass., Feb. 10, 2004 – Senior guard Kelly McOmber (Woodbury, Conn.) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Springfield College beat Smith, 72-47, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s basketball game tonight at Ainsworth Gym.

With the win, SC improves to 14-8 overall and 8-2 in the NEWMAC while Smith falls to 9-11 and 6-4 in the conference.

The Pride took control in the first half with a couple of major runs. At 10:56, a McOmber jumper started a 13-0 SC run which spanned 5:03. The Pride finished with a 7-0 run to give them a 42-19 lead at intermission.

That lead proved to be safe as Smith could never get back in the game.

Junior forward Kacey Wunsch (Londonderry, N.H.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa.) added 16 points while freshman guard LaToya Franklin (Latham, N.Y.) scored 12 of her own.

Senior guard Dasen Woitkowski scored 12 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for the Pioneers while sophomore forwards Shelley Harrison and Kerry Jo Nagle each added 14 points.

SC will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3:00 pm when it travels to Wheaton College.
