Women's Basketball Overruns Clark, 86-67
WORCESTER, Mass., Feb. 15, 2005 – Springfield College senior forward
Kacey Wunsch (Londonderry, N.H.) led all scorers with 22 points as the Pride extended its winning streak to six games by dispatching Clark, 86-67, in the Kneller Center on Tuesday night.
SC improved to 9-2 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and to 18-5 overall. The Pride, which had won 10 of its last 11, moved into a second-place tie with Mount Holyoke, which dropped a shocking 51-47 decision at home to lowly Smith on Tuesday. Both SC and Mount Holyoke trail front-running Babson (11-1). The Beavers travel to Mount Holyoke Saturday with a chance to wrap up the top seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament.
SC, which featured five scorers in double figures, hit 8-of-16 three-pointers and 14-of-15 free throws. Junior forward
Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa.) scored 19 points and freshman guard
Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R. I.) added 17 points. The Pride also compiled 23 assists, its second-highest total of the season. Parvin led SC with six assists.
Clark led 18-17 with 9:45 to play before SC took over, scoring 22 of the final 35 points of the half to take a 39-31 lead into the locker room. Wunsch scored 14 first-half points.
SC pushed its lead to 17 (58-41) with just over 13 minutes to play by opening the second half with a 19-10 run. Freshman guard
Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) nailed a three-pointer to push the Pride’s lead to 20 points with eight minutes remaining.
