Sullivan, U.S. Men's Volleyball Team Capture Silver Medal
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., August 11, 2004 – Springfield College head men’s volleyball coach
Charlie Sullivan helped guide the United States under-21 men’s volleyball team to the silver medal at the 2004 NORCECA Junior Continental Championships held last week in Winnipeg.
The tournament featured under-21 junior national teams from Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Cuba topped the U.S., 3-1, to win the gold medal and advance to the 2005 world championships. In pool play, the U.S. defeated Mexico and Canada by 3-0 scores, and beat Puerto Rico, 3-1.
Sullivan served as an assistant to head coach
John Sprow. Last February, Sprow led his Cal-Irvine squad to the championship of the 2004 Volleyball Hall of Fame-Morgan Classic, held at Springfield College.
“It was a great experience to coach some of the best players in the world,” Sullivan said. “International volleyball is played at such as high level. I’m looking forward to bringing some new wrinkles back Springfield College to help us win our fifth national championship.”
Sullivan is no stranger to international competition. He was an assistant coach for the U.S. Junior National Team that competed at the NORCECA Championship in Kelowna, British Colombia, in 2002. In 2001, Sullivan was selected by USA Athletes International to coach a U.S. team that traveled to Darwin, Australia, to compete in the Arafura Games. After falling in the Gold Medal round, the team won the Bronze Medal match against the South Australian Adaliad team.
Sullivan’s resume includes an internship with the USA Men’s National Team in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a four-year stint as head boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach at Marymount International School in Rome, Italy. He was also a member of the staff at the USA Men’s Volleyball Developmental and High-Performance Camps, and coached with the Youth National Team in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Sullivan guided the Pride to three-straight Molten Division III National Championship from 2001 to 2003. He was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Coaches Association (EIVA) Division III Coach of the Year all three of those seasons.
