SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 25, 2006 – Springfield College freshman outside hitter Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) led all players with an impressive 30 kills, but it was New York University (NYU), ranked third in Division III, which outlasted the No. 6 Pride, 3-2, on Saturday evening in non-conference action at Blake Arena.
The Violets improve to 5-8 overall on the 2006 season as SC falls to 6-10 overall on the year while remaining 4-2 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA)-Hay Division play.
NYU came out firing in the match, winning the first two games by scores of 30-24 and 30-26. The Pride responded, however, winning games three and four by identical 30-24 scores. It was the Violets that proved to be too much for SC, although, as NYU took the fifth and final game by a close, 15-13 margin.
Sophomore outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) had a solid match with 16 kills and nine digs, and sophomore outside hitter Javier Rosario (San Juan, Puerto Rico) also performed well with a match-best 11 digs to go along with 10 kills Sophomore setter Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.) registered a match-high 62 assists and a team-high five blocks.
NYU senior middle blocker Chris Schmidt paced the Violets with 15 kills and a match-high eight blocks. As a team, NYU compiled 32 blocks in the five-game match against SC’s 17 total team blocks. Sophomore Jon Wintermeyer and junior Macnair Sillick had double-digit kills, with 11 and 12, respectively.
