SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 25, 2006 – Springfield College outside hitters Eric Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) and Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) combined for 43 kills as the No. 6 Pride defeated the University of New Haven, 3-1, in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Conference-Hay Division action this evening at Blake Arena.
Palumbo led all players with 22 kills on 42 swings with 12 errors for a .238 hitting percentage, while adding four digs and two service aces. Fredrickson registered 21 kills in the win on 39 swings and 10 errors for a .282 hitting percentage, as he also chipped in with six digs, three blocks, and two service aces. SC improves to 10-13 overall on the season and 8-3 in the EIVA-Hay.
The Pride won a close, 36-34 game one before defeating the Chargers (17-5, 6-3 EIVA-Hay) by a 30-23 margin in game two. New Haven came back with a 30-24 win in game three as SC then closed the match out with a 30-25 game four win.
Freshman middle blocker Andrew Sipe (New Oxford, Pa.) recorded a match-high seven blocks in the victory while also adding 11 kills on 16 swings with just one error for an impressive .625 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.) compiled a match-best 60 assists, and junior libero Peter Sander (Scotia, N.Y.) led all players with 15 digs.
The Chargers were led by senior middle hitter Erwin Villaorduna with 21 kills, five digs, and four blocks, as sophomore Thomas Musto had a team-high six blocks in the loss.
