SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 14, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) has been named this week’s Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Division III Player of the Week, in a report announced on Tuesday morning.
Palumbo, a native of Rochester, N.Y., where he was a member of the Pace Bootlegger Volleyball Club, had three most impressive matches this past week for the Pride. In an EIVA-Hay Division match at East Stroudsburg last Wednesday evening (Feb. 8), Palumbo led all players with 21 kills and three service aces to go along with eight digs. The sophomore hit .333 for the match with seven errors in 42 attempts, recording 25 points for SC.
This past weekend, the Pride hosted the 2006 Volleyball Hall of Fame-Morgan Classic featuring Division I powers Penn State, Ohio State, and Stanford. In SC’s opening Morgan Classic match on Friday night (Feb. 10), Palumbo compiled 14 kills, eight digs and three blocks. On Saturday night (Feb. 11), against the eighth-ranked team in Division I, the outside hitter registered a match-high 20 kills and 10 digs against the Buckeyes of Ohio State. For his efforts on the weekend, Palumbo garnered a position on the Morgan Classic’s All-Tournament Team.
In its first 10 matches of the 2006 season, the Pride has accumulated a 5-5 overall mark with a solid 3-1 start to its EIVA-Hay Division season. SC will next host Mount Olive College tomorrow night (Feb. 15) in a 7:30 p.m. non-conference match in what will be the Pride’s last home game until February 25. SC will have four-straight road matches after the Mount Olive affair.
