CAMBRIDGE, Mass., February 1, 2006 - Springfield College freshman outside hitter Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) recorded a match-best 14 digs and a team-high 16 kills to go along with four blocks as the sixth-ranked Pride defeated Harvard University, 3-1, this evening in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA)-Hay Conference play.
The win keeps SC perfect in EIVA-Hay Conference play at 2-0 on the young season, as the Pride improves to 4-2 overall. Harvard falls to 0-4 overall in its first EIVA-Hay match of the season.
SC won the opening game of the match, 30-22, and after falling, 30-27, in the second game, took the next two by scores of 30-23 and 30-27 to seal its fourth victory of the 2006 season. Sophomore outside hitters Javier Rosario (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Eric Palumbo (Rochester, N.Y.) added double-digit kills for the Pride, with 12 and 11, respectively.
Sophomore setter Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.) registered 40 of SC's 45 assists on the night, as Rosario and sophomore libero Kyle Magoffin (Cheshire, Conn.) chipped in with nine kills apiece. Freshman middle blocker Andrew Sipe (New Oxford, Pa.) added five service aces in the winning effort.
Harvard's Seamus McKiernan led the Crimson with a match-high 17 kills and a team-high 13 digs, as Luke McCrone had 12 kills and six digs.
The Pride will look to remain undefeated in the EIVA-Hay as it next hosts Vassar College on Friday night, February 3, in a 7:30 p.m. start.
