ONEONTA, N.Y. - Springfield College sophomore attackman
Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored three goals and four assists to lead the No. 19 Pride past No. 18 Hartwick College, 15-6, this afternoon in Oneonta, N.Y.
Springfield (1-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, that included a pair of back-to-back goals by junior midfielder
Derek Pedrick's (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), with 12:26 remaining in the first quarter. After a Hartwick goal, SC would score four of the next five goals to take a 7-2 lead after the first quarter.
After scoring three unanswered goals in the second half for a 10-2 halftime lead, two straight goals by Brown gave SC a 12-2 lead with 8:38 remaining in the third quarter.
Hartwick (3-1) clawed its way back into the game with four unanswered goals, including three to open the fourth quarter, to cut the lead to 12-6 with 12:47 remaining in the game. Three unanswered Springfield goals to finish the game led the Pride to its first win of 2004, giving freshman goaltender
Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.), who made 13 saves, a win in his first collegiate start in goal.
Pedrick finished the game with three goals, while senior attackmen
Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.) and
Paul Purdy (Brewster, N.Y.) were each credited with two goals and an assist for SC, ranked No. 19 in the latest USILA Division III poll.
The Pride returns to action on Wednesday (March 17) when it hosts No. 2 Middlebury College in a 4:00 p.m. rematch of last season's NCAA Division III Tournament second-round game won by the host Panthers, 11-8.
