SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 20, 2006 – Springfield College freshman attacker Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.) scored a career-best four goals while also adding an assist as the Pride defeated non-conference foe, Amherst College, 15-7 this evening at Benedum Field.
After leading by just one goal at the half (4-3), the Pride went on an 11-4 tear in the second stanza to take the contest by a 15-7 margin. SC has now won three straight and six of its last seven games as it improves to 8-4 overall on the season. The Lord Jeffs fall to 2-8 overall on the year.
The first 30 minutes of action were played very evenly. With the score tied at two apiece in the second quarter, Amherst junior attacker Derek Cherney found the back of the net off a feed from senior quad-captain Kevin Boova with just 4:19 left in the half. That just so happened to be the last Lord Jeff lead of the night, however, as the Pride scored two more times in the last four minutes of the half to take a 4-3 lead.
From the on it was all SC, as the Pride outscored Amherst by a 6-3 advantage in the third, and a 5-1 margin in the fourth. For the game, senior All-American Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) and freshman attacker Jake Jones (Amherst, Mass.) scored three goals each in the win. Brown also added two assists as he now has a team-best 32 points on the season (26 goals, six assists).
Junior netminder Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) had an excellent game in goal for SC, saving 19 Lord Jeff shots and allowing just seven goals, as Amherst took a total of 38 shots on the night to the Pride’s 42.
Amherst was led by senior midfielder Joaquin Walker with three goals, as Cherney added two Lord Jeff scores. Freshman goalkeeper Matt Pietroforte stopped 13 SC shots on net.
The Pride will look to make it four-in-a-row as it next hosts the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Pilgrim Lacrosse League action on Saturday afternoon, April 22nd, in a 1:00 p.m. start.
