No. 16 Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down Williams, 10-7

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 31, 2004 – Springfield College junior midfielder
Kevin Warnock (Somers, Conn.) netted two tallies as nine Pride players scored a goal to defeat Williams College, 10-7, this evening on a rain-soaked Benedum Field.
The victory gave Springfield (4-3), which out-shot the Ephs 42-18, its third consecutive win of the spring.
Williams (0-4) scored first, as freshman midfielder
Chris Merwin (Baltimore, Md.) tallied a man-up goal at the 10:41 mark of the first quarter. After SC junior midfielder
Mark Maitland (Salem, Mass) evened the game with a goal at the 9:17 mark, two-straight Eph goals put Williams back on top, 3-1, with 6:23 on the clock. Pride junior midfielder
Derek Pedrick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) cut the lead to one with a goal at 2:42, before Williams junior attackman
Corey Whitbeck (Hudson, N.Y.) answered with a tally :40 seconds later to reclaim a two-goal advantage. SC would fire back, tying the game on goals by Warnock and junior midfielder
Jason Beal (Homer, N.Y.) as the first quarter ended with the score tied, 4-4.
Williams again struck first with two straight goals to lead, 6-4, with 11:04 remaining in the second quarter. Warnock would notch his 10th goal of the season with 9:06 on the clock, before goals by senior attackman
Paul Purdy (Brewster, N.Y.) at the 1:22 mark, and another by sophomore attackman
Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) with only :02 seconds remaining in the half, gave the Pride a slim, 7-6, lead at halftime.
As the rain continued to make the playing surface even more slick, the SC defense started to shut down the Eph offense. Springfield goals by junior attackman

Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.) at 6:23, and sophomore midfielder
Brandon Asplundh (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) gave SC a commanding four-goal lead, 10-6, with 4:57 remaining in the third quarter. Williams sophomore attackman
Eric Gottenborg (Greenwood Village, Colo.) scored the game’s final goal with :40 second to play in the third, as neither team found the net in the final quarter of play for the 10-7 final.

Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) was credited with five stops to pick up his fourth win of the season, while Williams senior goalie
Matt Rade (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made 14 save for the Ephs.
Springfield opens its defense of last season’s Pilgrim League title this Saturday (April 3), hosting the Mass. Maritime Academy at 1:00 p.m. in its conference opener on Benedum Field.
