Burch Competes For Berumda at FINA World Championships in Spain

Roy Burch Barcelona, Spain - August 2, 2013 - Former Springfield College standout Roy-Allan Burch competed in a pair of events at the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain for his native country of Bermuda this week.

Burch first raced on July 31st, when he won his 100 freestyle heat in a time of 50.66, which set a new Bermuda record. Hefinished with the 39th fastest qualifying time out of 90 swimmers, and broke the Men’s Bermuda 100m Freestyle record of 51.01 he set two years ago during the 2011 FINA World Championships in China.

On August 2nd, Burch raced in the 50 freestyle, the event in which he has represented his country in at the past two Olympic Games. He would go on to touch the wall in 22.93 seconds, posting the 37th fastest qualifying mark among the 107 swimmers in the competition. Burch also owns the Bermudan national record in the 50 free with a time of 22.47, which he set in the 2012 London Olympic Games

“The competition and environment has been great for me and I hope that I have done my country proud," said Burch. "I work hard everyday to be better each year and it has shown. I will continue to work hard and push the standard for Bermuda swimming and Bermuda athletes alike.”

Burch had a tremendous career at Springfield College, as he competed in three NCAA Championships and still holds three individual program records and is a part of three other relay records. He was a major reason why the Pride captured its lone New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship in 2005 and later went on to finish 9th as a team at the NCAA Championships.
