SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 8, 2004 – No. 10 Springfield College will play No. 8 College of New Jersey in the second round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday, November 13 at 1:00 p.m. in Salisbury, Maryland. The 18-team field was announced on Sunday evening.
The Pride won an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after defeating Wellesley College, 2-0, in the championship game of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament. In its fifth NEWMAC Tournament Championship game appearance in the last six seasons, SC won its third conference title since winning two-consecutive in 1999 and 2000.
SC appeared in the 1997, 1999 and 2000 NCAA D-III Tournaments, finishing in the national semifinals in 1999, and as national runner-up in 2000.
In its last eight games, the Pride has outscored the opposition, 37-3, including five-straight shutouts.
SC defeated The College of New Jersey in their last meeting, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2000 NCAA Tournament. The previous year, TCNJ got the best of the Pride, 3-2, in the national semifinals.
Top-ranked Salisbury (18-0), the defending national champion, awaits the winner of Wednesday’s (Nov. 10) play-in game between New England College and Drew University. Salisbury will host the regional final on Sunday, November 14.
